Understanding Your Plan Options

Medicare has four main parts. Here's what each covers.

🏥

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

All-in-one plans from private insurers covering hospital, medical, drug, dental, vision, and hearing. Often $0 premium.

🛡️

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Fills the gaps in Original Medicare — covering copays, deductibles, and coinsurance. Pairs with Original Medicare.

💊

Part D Drug Plans

Stand-alone prescription drug coverage that works with Original Medicare or a Medigap plan.

🦷

Dental / Vision / Hearing

Stand-alone supplemental plans for dental, vision, and hearing coverage not included in Original Medicare.

Medicare Enrollment Periods

Missing your enrollment window can result in penalties. Know your dates.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

A 7-month window around your 65th birthday. 3 months before, your birthday month, and 3 months after.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

October 15 – December 7 each year. Anyone on Medicare can switch, join, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan.

General Enrollment Period (GEP)

January 1 – March 31 if you missed your IEP. Coverage starts July 1. Late enrollment penalties may apply.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

Triggered by life events like losing employer coverage, moving, or losing Medicaid eligibility.
